Individualization - what does it mean?

“People exceptionally talented in the Individualization theme are intrigued with the unique qualities of each person.  They have a gift for figuring out how different people can work together productively” - CliftonStrengths

What does it mean to me

Simply put, I am fascinated by people’s stories.  I love hearing about what makes each of us “tick” - what makes us unique individuals.  I am inquisitive when I meet new people because I am curious to know everything about you.  Knowing about you helps me understand how to interact with you, which puts me at ease.

I see myself as a casting director or an orchestra conductor - I recognize and “zoom in” on what each individual can bring to the table, and I like to create the space for them to shine!

How does it show up in my life?

As a former Project and Account manager, I used this strength to pull multi-disciplinary teams together and get them working effectively together.  I like to recognize (and celebrate) that teams are, in fact, a group of individuals and we are all unique in our skills and approach.  None of us are perfect, but together we can create great things!  I have used my Individualization to not only to get the most out of group collaboration, but also to build strong partnerships with my clients.  I use this strength to “style-shift” (some people call it style-flex) so I give each individual the attention and guidance they specifically crave.

In times of distress, too, I see my Individualization come through.  Instead of leaning on generalizations, I prefer to uncover what each person needs, how each person is coping.  At my last teaching experience at Northwestern University, I saw this come through during finals time, when the students were stressed and anxious.  Some students needed encouragement, some needed detailed instructions, and others just needed me to sit quietly next to them while they studied.  I enjoy providing all kinds of individualized support when the stress levels are on the rise.
